Kautex has taken the next step in its sustainability journey, submitting near-term targets to the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) for validation.
As part of its sustainability roadmap, Kautex announced its commitment to carbon neutrality by 2050 and to near-term, company-wide emission reduction targets in line with SBTi in 2022. The plan includes an 80% reduction of Scope 1 and 2 emissions and a 30% reduction of Scope 3 emissions by 2030.
“Kautex is not only ‘claiming’ to be a sustainable company, but we are also publicly committing to achieving this goal,” said Sophie Louis, director, Energy & Sustainability. “We are attacking the challenge from all angles – waste and energy reduction, using renewable energy sources, sourcing sustainable materials for our product and examining end-of-life recycling and circular economy options for our new innovations. We look forward to receiving SBTi’s validation in Q1 2024.”
Kautex created concrete actions to reduce its Scope 1 and 2 emissions, including energy and waste reduction activities to reduce Scope 1 and committing to seek out renewable energy sources to address its Scope 2 emissions. The company uses renewable energy at all its locations in Europe, China and Mexico as well as its plant in Lavonia, GA, USA. Additionally, Kautex has requested its suppliers to commit to similar initiatives by joining CDP, disclosing their current carbon footprint and taking actionable steps to reduce their own Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions to reach carbon neutrality by 2050.
“Achieving net-zero emissions requires the commitment of suppliers across the supply chain,” continued Ms. Louis. “It is a collaborative effort across the entire industry. To date, we’ve received positive feedback from many of our suppliers who are already on their own sustainability journey, and we look anticipate additional suppliers will soon create their own sustainability commitments. We look forward to collaborating with our suppliers to accelerate our sustainability journey.”
